Explore Belitung Belitung, Indonesia

Highlights

Belitung, or Belitong (taken from the name of a kind of sea slug according to the local language), formerly known as Billiton is an island off the eastern coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, and flanked by the Straits of Gaspar and the Karimata Strait. The island is famous for its white pepper, which is called sahang in the local language, and C-type mining materials such as white tin (Stannuum), quartz sand, white clay (kaolin), and granite.

Aside from that, lately it has become an alternative nature tourist destination. The island was once owned by the United Kingdom (1812), before being exchanged with the Netherlands, together with Bengkulu, Singapore, and New Amsterdam (now part of New York City). Around the island are small islands such as Mendanau Island, Kalimambang, Gresik, and Seliu, all with their own set of charms. Belitung island is divided into 2 districts, namely the Belitung Regency with Tanjung Pandan as its capital, and East Belitung with Manggar as its capital. Most of the inhabitants, especially those living in coastal areas, are very familiar with the marine life which is rich with seafood.

Various fish are processed into foods which makes the daily diet of the locals. The wealth of the sea became one of the livelihoods of the Belitung people. Another natural resource that is not less important for the people of Belitung is tin, which has started since the time of the Dutch East Indies. The locals in Belitung are mostly consisted of Malays (speaking with a Belitung dialect) and Chinese ancestry of Hokkien and Hakka. Despite the diversity, the people are uniformly very warm and will no doubt make you feel very welcomed on Belitung Tour Packages!
